Print Shop of the Cherokee Phoenix Newspaper at New Echota

We have now walked out the back door of the print shop. The Cherokee Phoenix was the newpaper for the Cherokee Nation started in 1828. It was published both in the Cherokee and English languages. This was quite an accomplishment, since Sequoyah had only invented the Cherokee Alphabet and Syllabary in 1821.

To keep the Cherokee from spreading the word about what was happening during the forced Indian Removal, the troops destroyed the printing press and dumped the movable type into the well. Since the type was made of lead, it poisoned the water in the well.
